Yesterday, Porsche underscored that importance by revealing the new GT2 RS, for the first time, in the most unlikely of ways.

WHY THE 996 IS THE BEST 911

996 is the best 911
Has there been a 911 generation more polarizing than the 996? There are a few years of 911s which are not well liked (I'm looking at you, thermal reactor cars). From the car's inception through the end of the 993 generation, the most polarizing change was the addition of Macpherson Strut front suspension in 1989. To the Porsche loyal, however, every new iteration of 911 was familiar. Breaking with that familiarity bred contempt. The 996, with its controversial styling, and more importantly its water-cooling, tended to boil blood more than coolant.

HUNZIKER ART CAR: NOVA SCOTIA TO CALIFORNIA IN A GT3

LUFT 4 VID DONUT MEDIA

Last month we introduced you to Nic Hunziker's new "Art Car" project where he's bartering art in order to build what he calls "the missing link between the 996.1 GT3 and the 996.2 GT3 RS", a 1999 GT3R Strassenversion. When we last left you, Nic and FLATSIXES.com contributor Brett Sloan were on their way to Nova Scotia to pick-up the donor car for this project, a 996 GT3 acquired through a lot of searching and the liberal use of original artwork to sweeten the deal. After a few technical delays, and some paperwork snafus, Nic and Brett made it to Canada and have been driving the GT3 cross-country back to LA.

PROJECT CARS 2 PAT LONG
The new 2018 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series Coupe from Porsche is the most powerful 911 Turbo S ever! That's a pretty bold statement considering the 911s that have come before it. I still remember my first time driving a Turbo S.  It left an indelible mark in my memory. This newest version, limited to just 500 units worldwide makes 607 horsepower (or 27 more than before) and 553 lb. -ft. of torque available between 2,250 and 4,000 RPMs.

Have you driven a 991.2 with Porsche's newly turbocharged engine yet? If you haven't, you really should stop on by your local dealer and try one on for size. You'll be amazed at how non-turbo like these new turbos are. Sure, I know, how could it ever be as good as a normally aspirated engine? What about Turbo lag, won't it bother me? The truth is, Porsche's done a remarkable job with the new 991.2 and their biggest engine architecture change since switching from air-cooled to water-cooled. The first time we drove a 991.2 we were pleasantly surprised at what we've come to know as Porsche's new normal.

GRAND CAYMAN: PATRICK PILET AND RICHARD LIETZ ON THE 911 RSR

31 facts about lemans
"It's a brand new approach, but Porsche has a lot of experience with many other cars. There is also Cayman, a mid-engine car, and we have some data from that. So, we didn't start from a white page completely." Those are Patrick Pilet's words, not mine. I'm not trying to say the new 911 RSR is a Grand Cayman, but experience with the Cayman certainly helped Porsche to create their new racer. Pilet and Lietz offer numerous insights into developing the RSR, Lietz in particular was on hand for nearly all of the tests.
