In this picture, Leonard Turner's third of an ongoing series, we take you back to 1996 and Porsche's historic victor at Le Mans.  For those of you who missed the original announcement, Leonard was Porsche Panorama’s chief photographer for some 40 years. His photographs have been published in numerous books and magazines including Autoweek, Road & Track, Automobile, Christophorus, and Excellence (just to name a few).  It was with this background in mind that we asked Leonard to open his archives to you and share them here on FLATSIXES.com.  Our plan is to share one of Leonard's images with you every other week, along with the story behind it, in our newest feature, "The Last Turn".  Read more of the story behind this picture taken above the pits at Le Mans in 1996.

Crashes and racing go hand and hand.  It's one of the many risks drivers face every time they get behind the wheel. Fortunately, for most, car construction and safety gear had risen to a level that drivers survive all but the most horrific of crashes.  Every once in a while, though, you see a crash and figure no way anyone survived.  That was my gut reaction when I watched Mark Webber crash at high speeds into the wall of the last turn this weekend in Brazil.  Watch the crash yourself and you'll see that Mark definitely had a guardian angel watching over him.

Back in 1975, Arnold Wagner, Dieter Inzenhofer, and Alwin Springer left Vasek Polak Porsche to form their own Porsche tuning and race preparation shop in Southern California. Their shop was responsible for build and preparation of hundreds of highly successful racing cars in North America through the 70s, 80s, and 90s. As the gentlemen aged, business slowed, and Porsche Motorsport North America purchased the brand when the last holdout, Dieter, retired last year.
